The government says the UK Border Agency has begun collecting data on the numbers of asylum claims based on sexual orientation.

In March, immigration minister Damian Green said the data was not being collected and cited “disproportionate cost”.

Campaigners for LGBT asylum seekers were angry at the admission and said the coalition government could not keep its promise on protecting those at risk of violence and persecution if it did not record details of cases.

Last July, the Supreme Court ruled that the policy of returning gays and lesbians to dangerous countries under the belief that they could be “discreet” about their sexual orientation must end.

Following this, the Home Office told the UK Border Agency that relevant cases should be “flagged and recorded” to ensure that rules were not being breached and that cases were being monitored.

In a statement given to LGBT Asylum News, a Home Office spokesman said: “The government has made it clear that it is committed to stopping the removal of asylum seekers who have genuinely had to leave particular countries because of their sexual orientation or gender identification.

“From July 1st we have begun to record data on claims brought on the grounds of sexual orientation on our case information database.

“We are also reviewing all first asylum decisions in these cases taken between April 1st and June 30th to evaluate the success of our new guidance and training.”

Paul Canning, of LGBT Asylum News, said: “This is good news and puts the UK ahead of most other countries. Why they’re not proudly announcing it is very odd. It means that in the future we can know whether the system is working or not based on some facts.”

“However this doesn’t affect cases now in the system and of course serious concerns remain about their treatment, as well as decreasing access to good legal advice.”

Απόψε στις 8.20 το βράδυ λεωφορείο του ΡΟΔΑ περνώντας από την οδό Λαμπράκη...και ενώ ήταν παράνομα παρκαρισμένα τρία οχήματα, από κακή εκτίμηση ή αδιαφορία, συγκρούστηκε μαζί τους! Πολύ συχνό το πρόβλημα και γνωστή η απουσία της δημοτικής αστυνομίας... που είναι απασχολημένη με την έκδοση προστίμων σε σωστά παρκαρισμένα που όμως δεν έχουν ή έχει λήξει το εισιτήριό τους!!!

Στις 4:00 τα ξημερώματα νταλίκα η οποία μετέφερε έλαια και κατευθύνονταν σε εργοστάσιο βιοντίζελ ανετράπη στην Εγνατία οδό στο ύψος της Μέστης (Αλεξανδρούπολη).
Ο Τούρκος οδηγός της νταλίκας τραυματίστηκε και μεταφέρθηκε στο νοσοκομείο. Ο κίνδυνος να χυθεί το φορτίο στο δρόμο ήταν πολύ μεγάλος και αυτό θα έφερνε πολλά προβλήματα και πιθανώς η Εγνατία να έκλεινε για ώρες. Στο σημείο έφτασε γερανός ο οποίος με λεπτούς χειρισμούς κατάφερε να σηκώσει το βυτίο χωρίς να υπάρξουν άλλα προβλήματα. Στο οδόστρωμα χύθηκε μικρή ποσότητα ελαίου, η οποία απομακρύνθηκε από πυροσβέστες. Η Εγνατία παρέμεινε κλειστή για αρκετή ώρα δημιουργώντας προβλήματα στους οδηγούς.

Lib Dem MP says Home Office appears ‘institutionally homophobic’ on asylum

A Liberal Democrat MP has accused the Home Office and the UK Border Agency of appearing “institutionally homophobic” in cases of gay asylum seekers.

Mike Hancock, the MP for Portsmouth South, wrote to immigration minister Damien Green on behalf of a gay Ugandan constituent who was due to be deported on Monday.

Robert Segwanyi, 33, says he was tortured and jailed in Uganda for being gay but an immigration judge ruled there was no evidence that he is gay and suffering post-traumatic stress disorder – in contrast to a psychiatrist’s report.

His return to Uganda, a notoriously homophobic country, was deferred at the last minute.

In a letter to Mr Green dated July 11th, Mr Hancock wrote that he had “grave concerns … that this case shows that the UKBA and the Home Office are institutionally homophobic”.

Calling for a judicial review, he added: “There should be better consideration of this case so that [they] can demonstrate that [they are] not.”

The letter also cited a 2010 Stonewall report on gay asylum seekers, which said the UKBA was making “fundamental errors of judgement and presumption” in dealing with gay asylum seekers.

Last year, the Supreme Court ruled that gay asylum seekers could not be returned to homophobic countries on the basis that they can be “discreet” about their sexuality.

The coalition government has promised that gay asylum seekers who face a real risk of persecution will not be deported.

LGBT asylum campaigner Paul Canning told PinkNews.co.uk: “There is no question that these attitudes persist in the department – and in the judiciary. Clearly the message has not got through that these cases are now to be treated differently – meaning that LGBT people are at risk of being returned to unsafe countries like Uganda, breaking the government’s promise.”

“I have seen the Home Office’s Business Plan for the rest of this parliament – they have no plans to do anything more. This is a broken promise on LGBT asylum.”

PinkNews.co.uk is awaiting comment from the Home Office.

Mr Segwanyi, who is currently in Haslar Detention Centre, came to the UK in June 2010 after, he says, escaping prison in Uganda.

He applied for asylum shortly after arrival but was denied leave to stay in the UK and an immigration judge rejected his appeal.

FIFA criticises Nigeria’s football coach over ‘lesbian ban’

The governing body of football, FIFA, has criticised the coach of the Nigerian women’s football team for saying she had forced out lesbian players.

Last week, coach Eucharia Uche told the New York Times that since she was hired in 2009, she has eradicated homosexuality from the squad.

According to the newspaper, she said lesbianism was “morally very wrong” and “a dirty issue” and claimed that she had taken steps to stamp it out.

Tatjana Haenni, FIFA’s head of women’s competitions, told German television channel ARD: “FIFA is against all forms of discrimination.”

She added that FIFA would be speaking to Ms Uche about the remarks, AFP reports.

In Germany, where the women’s world cup is being held, the national Football Federation added:”Our association resolutely combats any kind of discrimination. This also includes the fight against homophobia.

“The current issue around the coach of the Nigerian national team certainly requires further discussion. But this can only be done by the tournament host, which is FIFA.”

Slim majority of Republicans support legal recognition of gay relationships

A poll says that just over half of Republicans support some form of legal recognition for gay couples.

The Public Policy Polling survey asked 1,000 people who identified as Republicans about their views on marriage equality.

Only 12 per cent said gay couples should be allowed to marry. Support for civil unions was higher, with 39 per cent agreeing with them.

This meant that 51 per cent back either marriage equality or civil unions.

But 48 per cent said there should be no recognition at all of gay relationships.

Support for marriage equality was highest among high-income respondents as 24 per cent in this category said gays should be able to wed.

Last month, another American poll suggested that just over half of voters support marriage equality.

The CNN poll found that 51 per cent of the 824 adults surveyed said gay couples should be allowed to wed.

Among those under 50, support levels rose to 60 per cent.

CNN polls in 2008 and 2009 found that just 44 per cent of those surveyed supported gay marriage.

K: What place do you call home and what ethnicity are you?

SK: I call Los Angeles home, but I was born in Thailand. I’m half Thai and half Cambodian. I came to the United States when I was about 6 months old.
K: Wow, such a small baby at the time. You’re a really popular model in the “scene” right now. What got you started?

SK: I’ve been working with the automotive industry for 3 years now. What got me known was being a spokes model for Yokohama Tires. From there on, it just snowballed and it makes me want to persue modeling even more. I also want to be able to branch out into acting.
K: That’s right. I remember seeing a giant poster ad of you at SEMA last year. Nice picture I might add! Acting seems to be the craze for models. I guess it’s the next natural progression. What kind of acting are you looking towards?.

SK: Thanks! Well, anything from drama or comedy. I’m also looking towards daytime or primetime TV. They need more diverse Asians on television! It’s the same old typical looking Asians we see on TV all the time.

K: Yokohama is keeping you on fulltime as their 1st spokesmodel. Where can the fans find you this season?

SK: Yokohama has me on contract. You’ll see me at all the drifting events, D1 and Formula D. I’m also touring with HIN, this year as one of their Official Glow Go Go girls. My partners are Sasha Singleton and Christine Mendoza.

K: Wow, talk about an awesome threesome! I’m sure you get hit on alot by guys in the industry. What’s the best line you’ve heard so far?

SK: I can’t think of any rite now, but i must admit, pick up lines are very cheesy!
K: Hahah.. we agree. What do you like better, the Drifting Competitions or the Import Shows?SK: I actually like both, because the fans that goes to these shows are all the same enthusiast, they are all great.
K: Have you tried drifting yourself? There’s nothing like a hot model doing an eternal drift with her head out the window cheesing for the cams.

SK: LOL. I’ve been in one of the japanese racer’s car, while he was drifting…it felt incredible, better that a roller coaster! Haven’t done it myself yet though.
K: Who was the lucky driver and what’s your favorite ride now?

SK: Orido Manabu, but he is now a D1 judge. I’m in love with the Porsche Cayenne.
K: Ahh I love that car. If you ever get it, slap on a Gembella kit and just roll down Sunset with it. I’m sure you need to stay in top shape for modelling. Do you do alot of fitness work? What do you like to eat?

SK: Believe it or not, I try staying in good shape my running a miles each day, but with traveling I haven’t been doing any exercises…and eating, ha! thats my favorite hobby. I like fruits, fritos with chili, fried chicken, hot and sour soup, noodles, etc….haha
K: that’s a nice selection! You don’t sound to picky with your food… is it the same with guys?

SK: Hmmm…no! haha, with guys, a girl has to be picky, if she wants to be in that ideal relationship!
K: So what’s it take for a guy to get into that “ideal” relationship.

SK: Be a gentlemen and be cool!
K: Easier said than done.

SK: You guys would be surprised with the nice feedback from girls when you are a gentlemen. Try it.
K: Hmm.. maybe we should open the door a bit more often. So if you had to choose… brawns or brains?

SK: Brains for sure. I can’t really stand guys that are way too into their themselves.
K: Who does?! We agree there. Any parting words for the Kineda fans?
