James and Vick Shine

it’s probably not fair to equate LeBron James with Michael Vick. After all, one’s a heartless dog killer while the other just dropped his home town (Akron/Cleveland) in favor of Miami. But they’re two of the most hated professional athletes in the US and both went off last night in big wins.

LeBron’s Return to Cleveland

After the boos cleared LeBron reminded Cleveland of why they’re so heart broken. King James went off for 24 points in the third quarter and finished the night with 38 points, rebounds, 8 assists and no turnovers. More importantly, the Heat look like they’re resigning themselves to start the offense through LeBron at the expense of point guard Carols Arroyo, who played 28 minutes with one assist.

There’s some chatter today on whether LeBron’s former teammates were a little too chummy with their former leader. With TNT’s cameras trained on LeBron he was often seen chatting it up and laughing in front of the Cavaliers bench. I thought that was a little weird. I’ve got friends who I compete against, and while I may express a kind word or two during the game, I try to do my catching up after the game.

The Heat improved to 12-8 overall but still have only one quality win (early season win at home versus the Magic) this year. Next up, home Saturday for Atlanta. Now this is starting to get interesting.

Vick on a Roll

Michael Vick makes plays. Oh yeah, he’s pretty damn tough too. Vick was knocked around by a Texans pass rush that hurried him for most of the game, but Vick kept making plays. Vick threw for over 300 yards and rushed for another 48 in leading the Eagles to a 34-24 come-from-behind win over Houston.

Pending the outcome of the Giants-Redskins game Sunday, the Eagles are now in sole possession of first in the NFC East. The Eagles hit the road for games at Dallas and New York before returning home for the Vikings and the Cowboys to end the season.

Brent Celek’s Play

I’d be a really bad sports fag if I failed to mention the sweet play made by Eagles tight end and major hottie Brent Celek.

With a little over six minutes left and a 3-point lead the Eagles faced third-and-19 from Houston’s 24-yard line. At first, Vick’s pass to Celek was ruled an 18-yard completion, but Celek lobbied head coach Andy Reid to challenge the play and the call was overturned; allowing the Eagles to score again for the final 10-point margin.
